Competition in the UK Telecommunications Marketplace
Over the last two decades, The UK has been one
of the leading proponents in opening up its telecommunications market to
increased competition. This has
resulted in a move against the dominance of the incumbent operator BT, and it
has meant the entry of hundreds of new competitors in the provision of
telecommunications services and equipment. The 1998 European Union directive on telecommunications created a new
framework for telecoms across Europe, encouraging competition and ending
telephone service monopolies in other EU countries.... The UK is therefore part
of an open and competitive European telecommunications marketplace.
